Thrifting Treasure Hunt: Exploring Value Village in Marietta, Georgia
(2 minute 30 second read)
I began my thrifting journey with my granny at a very young age, it started with garage sales and it never stopped.
Thank you Granny for teaching me that you can be fly on a budget.
How to spot a good thrift store?
The best clothing thrift stores are TIDY. While thrifting is known for being other people’s junk, it can be so much more if you’re in the right place. The best stores sort through their donations, pick the trash out of pockets, wipe things down and make the clothing look semi-good for display. I try to stick to Goodwill, Salvation Army, Buffalo Exchange, etc. There are local stores that are good as well but those rundown and sometimes gross thrift stores, I would not suggest for shopping for clothing. Those stores are for adventurous and seasoned collectors who are looking for antiques and/or vintage furniture to revive.
*Fun fact: I worked at Goodwill in college and I actually loved it! I would have first dibs on the good stuff and I very much considered myself a “VIT”(very important thrifter.lol. I was pricing garments fairly and I also loved making displays and seeing if it helped items sell faster. I occasionally tried out the equipment, which didn't always end well, I remember trying out this rolling pushup ab wheel and as I was rolling down for my pushup, I loss balance and bussed my chin.lol Looking back it was hilarious but in the moment, it was sooooo embarrassing with customers steps away looking on in concern.*
How do I turn my outfit from thrifty to trendy?
Non-Sewers: Find your favorite celebs style photos, print them out or screenshot them and then find exact matches for the outfits. Make sure they fit you perfectly, of you don’t find a look, find a better thrift store because I promise you, it’s out there. For my non-sewers, I would suggest sticking to places like Buffalo Exchange and consignment shops, they typically have the latest trends.
Sewers: You can visualize and re-create looks. Add accessories to clothing you find, cut and remix. Upcycling is your friend. Also go check out some of my sewing tutorials, I have some really cool creations.
